Multicenter StudyFeasibility and utility of a cognitive screening for risk stratification in hospitalized older patients.
To determine whether the Mini-Cog can be applied by nursing staff to hospitalized elderly patients for cognitive impairment associated risk stratification. ⋯ Even under naturalistic conditions, nursing staff detected cognitively low-performing inpatients with the Mini-Cog. Using this short screening instrument should enable to predict complications of hospitalized older patients associated with cognitive impairment, a precondition to implement targeted care for this vulnerable patient group.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyEffects of pain treatment on sleep in nursing home patients with dementia and depression: A multicenter placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial.
To investigate the effects of pain treatment on sleep in nursing home (NH) patients with dementia and depression. ⋯ Compared with placebo, pain treatment improved sleep as measured with actigraphy. This implies that sleep, pain, and depression in NH patients should be critically evaluated and that pain treatment should be considered to be a potentially beneficial treatment.

Multicenter StudyThe relationship between changes in quality of life outcomes and progression of Alzheimer's disease: results from the dependence in AD in England 2 longitudinal study.
The relationship between conventional indicators of Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression and quality of life (QoL) outcomes is unclear. Dependence on others has been recommended as a unifying construct in defining AD severity. This study examined the relationship between indicators of disease severity (including dependence) and changes in QoL and utility over 18 months. ⋯ The natural progression of AD over 18 months does not lead to inevitable decline in QoL or utility. There are no clear or consistent direct relationships between changes in disease severity and QoL outcomes. The impact of increasing dependence and worsening disease severity is likely buffered by a combination of psychological, social and environmental factors.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyMemantine improves attention and episodic memory in Parkinson's disease dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies.
In both dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD), attentional dysfunction is a core clinical feature together with disrupted episodic memory. This study evaluated the cognitive effects of memantine in DLB and PDD using automated tests of attention and episodic memory. ⋯ These are the first substantial improvements on cognitive tests of attention and episodic recognition memory identified with memantine in either DLB or PDD.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyProviding activity for people with dementia in care homes: a cluster randomised controlled trial.
Activity levels remain low in care homes, but activity engagement can enhance residents' quality of life. ⋯ The results may be related to the following: wide variability in how the intervention was implemented, such as low staff attendance at the education and coaching sessions, and patchy provision of additional activities to residents; or the residents' severity of dementia or the choice of outcome measures. Future studies need to pay more attention to process measures such as implementation and fidelity strategies, and outcome measures that better capture the focus of the intervention such as level of engagement and activity.
