Is a Laboratory Evaluations Required in Every Case Admitting to the Pediatric Emergency Department with Epistaxis?
Epistaxis is a mostly self-limiting condition common among children and is rarely severe. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the incidence, demographic characteristics, causes of bleeding and treatment methods of patients who presented to the pediatric emergency department (PED) with epistaxis, and to determine in which cases a laboratory test should be used. ⋯ As a result of this study, it was concluded that laboratory tests should be performed in cases with chronic disease history, bilateral bleeding, active bleeding and nontraumatic epistaxis. The situation that causes epistaxis in the childhood age group should be determined with a good history and physical examination, laboratory tests should not be used in every patient.

Upper gastrointestinal bleeding in patients 80 years old and over. a comparison with younger patients and risk factors analysis for in-hospital and delayed mortality.
Outcomes in old patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) have been scarcely studied. Our aim was to compare very old individuals (>80 years old) with younger patients with UGIB, and to identify risk factors for the main outcomes. ⋯ Creatinine levels, cirrhosis or the onset of UGIB while being an inpatient were independent risk factors for mortality in very old patients. Delayed mortality was higher among them, mostly caused by cardiovascular events and neoplasms, but not in-hospital mortality.

miR-221, miR-190b, miR-363-3p, miR-200c are involved in rat liver ischemia-reperfusion injury through oxidative stress, apoptosis and endoplasmic reticulum stress.
In this study, it was aimed to investigate the relationship between expression levels of micro-RNAs, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, apoptosis and oxidative stress markers in hepatic ischaemia-reperfusion (IR) injury. ⋯ There is a strong need to enlighten the physiopathological and molecular mechanisms of liver IR injury and to find more specific biomarkers for IR damage, and miR-221, miR-190b, miR-363-3p and miR-200c maybe used as potential biomarkers of hepatic IR injury.

Osteoporosis: Prevalence, awareness and pertinent risk factors in a cohort of elderly Asian population presenting with low-energy distal radius fractures.
This study aims to evaluate the awareness of osteoporosis and related risk factors in elderly Asian patients who present with distal radius fractures. The distal radius fracture is one of the most frequent fractures in the elderly cohort, owing to osteoporosis, and maybe a harbinger for further fractures, however, data is scarce regarding awareness of this condition among these patients. ⋯ We found a positive correlation between a patient's education status and osteoporosis awareness We believe that the role of the physician could be crucial in preventing further fractures in such patients via physician lead educational campaigns to target modifiable risk factors.

Potentially inappropriate medication use in elderly patients treated in intensive care units: a cross-sectional study using 2019 Beers, STOPP/v2 Criteria and EU(7)-PIM List.
To determine the prevalence of and the risk factors for Potentially Inappropriate Medication (PIM), the drug groups most commonly evaluated as PIMs in elderly patients in the ICUs by using 2019 Beers Criteria, STOPP version 2 (v2) Criteria and EU(7)-PIM List. The relation between mortality rate and length of ICU stay with PIMs was also examined. ⋯ In this study, the prevalence of PIM was determined higher in elderly patients in ICU. Our results supported that 2019 Beers Criteria for ICU patients seems to be more directive in detecting PIMs and determining the prognosis. Reducing the number of drugs administered may be the first step to decrease PIMs in elderly patients in ICU and to maintain the treatment safely.
