Meta AnalysisMethodological and Clinimetric Evaluation of Inspiratory Respiratory Muscle Ultrasound in the Critical Care Setting: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Significant variations exist in the use of respiratory muscle ultrasound in intensive care with no society-level consensus on the optimal methodology. This systematic review aims to evaluate, synthesize, and compare the clinimetric properties of different image acquisition and analysis methodologies. ⋯ Diaphragm muscle ultrasound is reliable, valid, and responsive in ICU patients, but significant variation exists in the imaging acquisition and analysis methodologies. Future work should focus on developing standardized protocols for ultrasound imaging and consider further research into the role of intercostal muscle imaging.

Adverse events during intrahospital transport of critically ill patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Intrahospital transport of critically ill patients is often necessary for diagnostic procedures, therapeutic procedures, or admission to the intensive care unit. The aim of this study was to investigate and describe safety and adverse events during intrahospital transport of critically ill patients. ⋯ Our findings suggest that adverse events can occur during intrahospital transport of critically ill patients, and that the frequency of critical adverse events is relatively low. The results of this meta-analysis could assist in risk-benefit analysis of diagnostic or therapeutic procedures requiring intrahospital transport of critically ill patients.

Meta AnalysisDecision-Making Authority During Tele-ICU Care Reduces Mortality and Length of Stay-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Although the current coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic demonstrates the urgent need for the integration of tele-ICUs, there is still a lack of uniform regulations regarding the level of authority. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the impact of the level of authority in tele-ICU care on patient outcomes. ⋯ In contrast to expert tele-consultations, decision-making authority during tele-ICU care reduces mortality and length of stay in the ICU. This work confirms the urgent need for evidence-based ICU telemedicine guidelines and reveals potential benefits of uniform regulations regarding the level of authority when providing tele-ICU care.

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy in Neurocritical Care: a Review of Recent Updates.
Neurocritical diseases and conditions are common causes of long-term disability and mortality. Early recognition and management of neurocritically ill patients is a significant challenge for neurosurgeons, neurologists, and neurointensivists. Although cerebral angiography, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, and radionuclide imaging are useful in neuromonitoring and neuroimaging, they have several important limitations: they are not readily available, cannot be used for a continuous assessment of cerebral function, and frequently require patient transport to the radiological department. ⋯ NIRS can detect and monitor multiple critical parameters, including cerebral oximetry, intracranial pressure, temperature, and cerebral blood flow. NIRS can be valuable for a wide variety of neurocritical diseases and conditions, such as ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, severe traumatic brain injury, brain tumors, and perioperative neurosurgery. Although NIRS has been studied extensively in multiple neurocritical conditions, more evidence on its application is needed.

Malnutrition is commonly observed after stroke and is closely associated with poor clinical outcomes. So, early nutrition support is particularly crucial for severe stroke patients. However, a significant number of critically ill patients are intolerant to enteral nutrition (EN). Probiotics have been widely used in malnutrition by various diseases and have a low incidence of enteral intolerance. So, we aim to elucidate the efficacy of probiotics in EN in improving the nutritional status and clinical prognosis of severe stroke patients with nasal feeding. ⋯ Our results demonstrated that probiotics supplementation might be an effective intervention for improving the clinical prognosis in severe stroke patients with nasal feeding, but no significant effect on increasing muscle circumference.
