Video Laryngoscopy is Associated With First-Pass Success in Emergency Department Intubations for Trauma Patients: A Propensity Score Matched Analysis of the National Emergency Airway Registry.
We sought to (1) characterize emergency department (ED) intubations in trauma patients and estimate (2) first-pass success and (3) the association between patient and intubation characteristics and first-pass success. ⋯ Emergency physicians are successful at intubating patients in the setting of trauma, and video laryngoscopy is associated with twice the odds of first-pass success when compared to direct laryngoscopy.

Predictors of intubation in COVID-19 patients undergoing awake proning in the emergency department.
Awake prone positioning (PP) has been used to avoid intubations in hypoxic COVID-19 patients, but there is limited evidence regarding its efficacy. Moreover, clinicians have little information to identify patients at high risk of intubation despite awake PP. We sought to assess the intubation rate among patients treated with awake PP in our Emergency Department (ED) and identify predictors of need for intubation. ⋯ Among COVID-19 patients treated with awake PP in the ED prior to admission, ROX index and P/F ratio, particularly 24 h after admission, may be useful tools in identifying patients at high risk of intubation.

Multicenter StudyPre-hospital emergency anaesthesia in trauma patients treated by anaesthesiologist and nurse anaesthetist staffed critical care teams.
Pre-hospital tracheal intubation in trauma patients has recently been questioned. However, not only the trauma and patient characteristics but also airway provider competence differ between systems making simplified statements difficult. ⋯ Pre-hospital tracheal intubation success and complication rates in trauma patients were comparable with in-hospital rates in a system with very experienced airway providers. Whether the short scene times contributed to a low pre-hospital mortality needs further investigation in future studies.

Pre-oxygenation using high-flow nasal oxygen vs. tight facemask during rapid sequence induction.
Pre-oxygenation using high-flow nasal oxygen can decrease the risk of desaturation during rapid sequence induction in patients undergoing emergency surgery. Previous studies were single-centre and often in limited settings. This randomised, international, multicentre trial compared high-flow nasal oxygen with standard facemask pre-oxygenation for rapid sequence induction in emergency surgery at all hours of the day and night. ⋯ The risk of desaturation was not increased during on-call hours. No difference was seen in end-tidal carbon dioxide levels in the first breath after tracheal intubation or in the number of patients with signs of regurgitation between groups. These results confirm that high-flow nasal oxygen maintains adequate oxygen levels during pre-oxygenation for rapid sequence induction.

Use of high-flow nasal cannula and noninvasive ventilation in patients with COVID-19: A multicenter observational study.
The use of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) and noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in patients with COVID-19 is debated. ⋯ In critically ill patients with COVID-19 who used HFNC and NIV as first-line therapy, the duration of HFNC + NIV, intubation rate and mortality did not differ between two groups. And no medical staff got nosocomial infection during this study.
