Modulation of nociceptive withdrawal reflexes evoked by single and repeated nociceptive stimuli in conscious dogs by low-dose acepromazine.
To investigate the modulation of the nociceptive withdrawal reflex (NWR) and temporal summation (TS) by low-dose acepromazine (ACP) in conscious dogs. To assess the short- and long-term stability of the reflex thresholds. ⋯ In dogs, 0.01 mg kg(-1) ACP IV had no modulatory action on the NWR evoked by single or repeated stimuli, suggesting no antinociceptive activity on phasic nociceptive stimuli. The evidence of the stability of the NWR thresholds supports the use of the model as an objective tool to investigate nociception in conscious dogs. A low dose of ACP administered as the sole drug, can be used to facilitate the recordings in anxious subjects without altering the validity of this model.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffect of different anesthetic agents on oculocardiac reflex in pediatric strabismus surgery.
The oculocardiac reflex (OCR) occurs frequently during pediatric strabismus surgery. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of various anesthetic regimens on the incidence of OCR during the surgery. ⋯ Propofol or remifentanil anesthesia was associated with a higher incidence of OCR during pediatric strabismus surgery than sevoflurane and desflurane anesthesia, when either ketamine or midazolam was used as an induction agent.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyEfficacy of fentanyl or alfentanil in suppressing reflex sneezing after propofol sedation and periocular injection.
A sneeze reflex may occur after propofol sedation and during periocular injections. Unexpected movement from sneezing can result in needle injury to the globe or optic nerve, or hematoma. We investigate the efficacy of concomitant fentanyl or alfentanil in reducing sneezing following propofol and during periocular injections. ⋯ Fentanyl or alfentanil suppressed sneezing after propofol sedation and eyelid anesthetic injection. These medications may prevent needle injury.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffect of remifentanil on oculocardiac reflex in paediatric strabismus surgery.
Rapidly acting narcotics enhance the degree of bradycardia due to the oculocardiac reflex (OCR) elicited by extraocular muscle (EOM) tension during strabismus surgery. We evaluated and compared the effects of remifentanil and sevoflurane on OCR during paediatric strabismus surgery. ⋯ Remifentanil enhanced the degree of bradycardia due to OCR as compared with sevoflurane during paediatric strabismus surgery.

Influence of the anaesthetic depth on the inhibition of the oculocardiac reflex during sevoflurane anaesthesia for paediatric strabismus surgery.
It remains controversial whether the anaesthetic depth as assessed by bispectral index (BIS) influences the oculocardiac reflex (OCR) during strabismus surgery. We investigated whether BIS-guided sevoflurane titration may help to optimize the anaesthetic depth for inhibition of the OCR during paediatric strabismus surgery. ⋯ We confirmed that OCR is relevant to the depth of anaesthesia. BIS values of 40-50 seem adequate for the inhibition of OCR. The results suggest that BIS may be a valuable tool during sevoflurane anaesthesia for strabismus surgery in children.
