Therapeutic Impact of Ascorbic Acid on Oral and Periodontal Tissues: A Systematic Literature Review.
Background and Objectives: Ascorbic acid (AA), a non-metabolized substance in the human body, is acquired from plant-based foods or supplements and is renowned for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, widely utilized in medicine, particularly in aesthetic practices. In dentistry, exploring adjunctive therapies like AA has gained traction to complement conventional treatments. This systematic literature review aims to assess the effects of ascorbic acid on oral and periodontal health. ⋯ Three studies noted reduced VAS scores posttreatment with AA (p < 0.05), while two demonstrated accelerated alveolar healing after tooth extraction. Four publications highlighted ascorbic acid's efficacy in addressing aesthetic concerns. Conclusions: Ascorbic acid emerges as a potentially effective adjunctive therapy for managing oral and periodontal diseases and improving gum aesthetics.

An error in concept and definition of recommended dietary allowance developed in 1941: Time to create new ones.
The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for vitamin C differs greatly (40-110 mg/d) across countries. In addition, vitamin D deficiency is, effectively, a pandemic, with a prevalence of approximately 25% to 80% across countries according to the findings in the recent scientific literature. ⋯ This is an extremely high intake level for a specific nutrient affecting only a few individuals (the upper 2.5%) of the generally healthy population. The RDA should be redefined by investigating at which intake level of a specific nutrient the incidence of a specific disease or mortality increases or decreases based on prospective cohort studies.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by accumulation of amyloid beta (Aβ) and hyperphosphorylated tau (Tau-P) in the brain. Aβ enhances the activity of kinases involved in the formation of Tau-P. Phosphorylation at Thr 181 determines the propagation of multiple tau phosphorylations. Aβ is derived from the amyloid precursor protein (APP). Cleavage of APP by β-secretase also initiates release of heparan sulfate (HS) from the proteoglycan glypican-1 (GPC1). ⋯ The increased release of GPC1-derived HS may interfere with Aβ formation and/or Aβ interaction with tau.

Background and Objectives: According to the Third International Consensus Definitions for Sepsis and Septic Shock (Sepsis-3), sepsis is defined as "life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection". The increased presence of free radicals causes an increase in oxidative stress. Vitamin C is an essential water-soluble vitamin with antioxidant activity and immunoregulatory effects that plays a potential role in the treatment of bacterial infections. ⋯ At follow-up, patients treated without vitamin C had higher mortality than patients treated with vitamin C as an adjuvant for the treatment of sepsis (55.6% vs. 18.8%, p = 0.03). We observed that the use of vitamin C was a protective factor for mortality in patients with sepsis (RR: 0.54, 95% CI: 0.31-0.96, p = 0.03). Conclusions: The use of vitamin C as an adjuvant to treatment decreases the risk of mortality by 46% in patients with sepsis and SOFA ≥ 9 compared to patients treated without vitamin C as an adjuvant to sepsis.

Aim To investigate whether the use of ion resonance and bromelain-vitamin C or bromelain-vitamin C is the best to prevent ankle complications in post operative bimalleolar surgery. Methods A total of 61 patients treated with bimalleolar surgery were enrolled. The patients were divided into three groups: the first group (n=22) treated only with the surgery, the second group (n=18) treated by ion resonance and bromelain-vitamin C, and the third group (n=21) was treated with bromelain-vitamin C. ⋯ The worst radiographic and stiffness results in the first group were found (p=0.006). The second group showed better bone healing (p=0.049), better performance in functional recovery measured by AFAS (p=0.039). Conclusion Ion resonance and bromelain-vitamin C group showed better outcomes to improve the functional outcome; it allows reduction of complications, consequently, an early return to quality life, and a corresponding improvement of the quality of life.
