Therapeutic Impact of Ascorbic Acid on Oral and Periodontal Tissues: A Systematic Literature Review.
Background and Objectives: Ascorbic acid (AA), a non-metabolized substance in the human body, is acquired from plant-based foods or supplements and is renowned for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, widely utilized in medicine, particularly in aesthetic practices. In dentistry, exploring adjunctive therapies like AA has gained traction to complement conventional treatments. This systematic literature review aims to assess the effects of ascorbic acid on oral and periodontal health. ⋯ Three studies noted reduced VAS scores posttreatment with AA (p < 0.05), while two demonstrated accelerated alveolar healing after tooth extraction. Four publications highlighted ascorbic acid's efficacy in addressing aesthetic concerns. Conclusions: Ascorbic acid emerges as a potentially effective adjunctive therapy for managing oral and periodontal diseases and improving gum aesthetics.

Supplementation of micronutrients is considered to be crucial in the reinforcement of the skin's barrier. In this paper, 14 nutritional compounds commonly used in food or pharmaceutic industries were analyzed in terms of influencing skin conditions. The major objective of this paper was to provide a narrative review of the available literature regarding several chosen compounds that are currently widely recommended as supplements that aim to maintain proper and healthy skin conditions. ⋯ Adding them to the diet or daily routine might have a positive influence on some skin inflammatory diseases such as atopic dermatitis or psoriasis. Further, UV radiation protection facilitated by some supplements and their impact on human cells might be helpful during chemotherapy or in preventing melanoma development. Further research is needed because of the lack of clear consensus regarding the doses of the described compounds that could provide desirable effects on the skin.

Endothelial dysfunction (ED) is an early marker of vascular damage linked to the loss of integrity of the endothelial lining and represents a key step in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). ED may be reversible, hence the development and testing of effective early interventions could be beneficial for the prevention and treatment of CVDs. ⋯ We hypothesize that the co-consumption of NO3- with vitamin C, which is a potent antioxidant, could enhance the "yield" of NO produced from a given NO3- dose byThis could translate into greater NO-dependent effects on endothelial function (EF) and overall vascular health (than may be experienced with NO3- supplementation alone). This review presents evidence to suggest that the combination of vitamin C and dietary nitrate could represent a promising and effective approach to improve EF and reduce CVD risk, and discuss opportunities for future research.

ReviewDietary Supplements - The Wild West of Good, Bad, and a Whole Lotta Ugly.
The popularity of and market for natural medicines (herbal remedies, dietary supplements, and vitamins) is accelerating. At the same time, evidence for their effectiveness (both in general and for specific conditions) and safety remains poor in many instances. Independent evaluations have identified products that are poorly manufactured, contaminated, or mislabeled. ⋯ Yet consumers often are unaware of these concerns and problems and continue to believe that "natural" means "safe." The current US regulatory framework founded in the 1994 Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) does not adequately protect the health of US consumers and urgently needs to be revised. At the same time, clinicians should update themselves regularly with the best available evidence on the natural medications most relevant to their areas of practice. We recommend some evidence-based resources that will help clinicians and their patients remain current in this area.
