Vitamin C (VC) is a key antioxidant of the Central Nervous System (CNS) and SLC23A2 (SVCT2) is the only transporter that actively transports VC into the brain. While the existing animal models of VC deficiency are in the whole body, the essential role of VC in brain development remains elusive. ⋯ On the other hand, the levels of Glutathione, Reduced (GSH), myeloperoxidase (MDA), 8-isoprostane, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6(IL-6) were significantly increased, but the levels of VC in brain tissue of the model group were decreased in Cre;svct2 f/f mice brain tissues, indicating the protective effect of VC against oxidative stress and inflammation during pregnancy. Thus, the conditional knockout of the SLC23A2 gene in the brain of mouse was successfully established by the CRISPR/Cas9 technology in our study, providing an effective animal model for studying the role of VC in fetal brain development.

Insulin resistance is a common risk factor for metabolic syndrome (MetS), leading to type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases. This study tested the hypothesis that the polygenic variants associated with the risk of insulin resistance (IR) interact with the lifestyles and nutrient intake of participants aged >40 in a large city hospital-based cohort (n = 58 701). ⋯ Adults having a high PRS for IR may benefit from a PBD containing high amounts of fruits, V-C, and flavonoids, which were found inversely related to IR risk. The results can be applied to personalized nutrition.

Endothelial dysfunction (ED) is an early marker of vascular damage linked to the loss of integrity of the endothelial lining and represents a key step in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). ED may be reversible, hence the development and testing of effective early interventions could be beneficial for the prevention and treatment of CVDs. ⋯ We hypothesize that the co-consumption of NO3- with vitamin C, which is a potent antioxidant, could enhance the "yield" of NO produced from a given NO3- dose byThis could translate into greater NO-dependent effects on endothelial function (EF) and overall vascular health (than may be experienced with NO3- supplementation alone). This review presents evidence to suggest that the combination of vitamin C and dietary nitrate could represent a promising and effective approach to improve EF and reduce CVD risk, and discuss opportunities for future research.

Effect of vitamin C on adrenal suppression following etomidate for rapid sequence induction in trauma patients: a randomized clinical trial.
Etomidate is an imidazole derivative that is widely used in the emergency department for Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI). Although it has a safe hemodynamic profile, there are some concerns about its suppressant effects on the adreno-cortical axis. Vitamin C, as an antioxidant, can play a protective role in this issue. ⋯ Etomidate can suppress the cortisol level in trauma patients who undergo RSI. Vitamin C can reduce this suppressant effect of etomidate.

The outcome of IV vitamin C therapy in patients with sepsis or septic shock: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
To update a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and further explore the outcome of IV vitamin C (IVVC) administration in sepsis or septic shock patients. ⋯ In this meta-analysis, IVVC in sepsis or septic shock patients significantly improved delta SOFA score and reduced the duration of vasopressor use, whereas it was not associated with reduction in short-term mortality and had higher adverse events.
